Trainees will be able to complete inspections and perform start-up, operating and shut-down procedures of bulldozers from a number of different manufacturers, following established safety rules and precautions and operating concepts and procedures. Each field exercise includes an instructor led demonstration, followed by a student practice session with ongoing coaching, skills evaluation and feedback from the instructor.
The construction-type field exercises progress from basic to advanced level. Introductory training on a laser control system is included.
• The learner will describe how to work safely while working on and around a bulldozer. This will include understanding key regulations, machine limitations, operating procedures and tasks and the use of PPE’s
• The learner will comply with safety requirements at all times during this course.
• Use equipment manuals and specifications to determine safe operating procedures and operational restrictions of dozer
• Assess a variety of excavating tasks for potential hazards, and explain strategy to work safely.
• Identify key regulations that apply to given tasks and conditions
• Operate Dozer in compliance with regulations and safe practices
• Use Personal Protective Equipment
• The learner will perform pre start equipment checks
• The learner will perform start up and shutdown procedures
• The learner will monitor the performance of the equipment
• The learner will perform daily maintenance checks in accordance to a supplied check list.
• The learner will describe the basic components and functions of a dozer
• The learner will describe basic troubleshooting signs and symptoms and appropriate responses for the operator
• The learner will strip and stockpile surface materials
• The learner will cut and fill surface materials to create an even level surface area
• The learner will plan cut and grade slopes to specification.
• The learner will create ditches to specification.
• The learner will spread and grade ballast
• The learner will perform finish grading within fine tolerance measurements
• Use ripper to loosen hard surface materials
• Match depth and speed to the work plan and conditions of the materials
- The learner will use the dozer to clear land of brush, trees, stumps and other unwanted materials separating dirt from brush.
Through classroom instruction and on site training, this program provides trainees with knowledge of the dozer operator’s job, the equipment, and safety concerns and responsibilities in addition to building operational skills. Trainees are expected to successfully complete a knowledge-based assessment and to demonstrate an established standard of performance for each operational skill, which includes conducting site and cab inspections, operating the boom, moving the stick in and out, loading and unloading the bucket, cleaning out sumps and ponds, unloading railcars, demonstrating pile management and trimming and discharging cargo.
The theory portion, successful completion of a practical component is necessary. The practical exercise consists of maneuvering an dozer through a predetermined obstacle course while performing several functions. Course will cover all aspects of the equipment such as:
• Orientation to the trade
• Identification of heavy equipment
• Personal safety and construction site safety
• Equipment maintenance and inspection
• Hazard assessment
• Volume calculations
• Site preparation
• Introduction to blueprints
• Soil assessment
• Trench digging and shoring
• Grade checking
• Basic rigging
• WHMIS Training
• First-aid and fire extinguisher training
• Basic operation of the equipment
• Perform pre-operational checks
• Basic maintenance
• Proper use of hydraulics
• Drive, turn and back the equipment
• Safe removal of material
• Rig and hoist materials
• Safely trench and shore the trench
• Assess grades
• Calculate load volumes and weights
• Running commentary skills
• Perform site preparation
