Trainees will be able to complete inspections and perform start-up, operating and shut-down procedures of excavators from a number of different manufacturers, following established safety rules and precautions and operating concepts and procedures. Each field exercise includes an instructor led demonstration, followed by a student practice session with ongoing coaching, skills evaluation and feedback from the instructor.
The construction-type field exercises progress from basic to advanced level. Introductory training on a laser control system is included.
The trainee will learn the following excavator training techniques:
• Comply with scheduled maintenance requirements
• Plan work procedures
• Comply with grades and stakes
• Perform preoperational inspection
• Excavator operation
• Set up equipment
• Grades and layout
• Excavate trenches in compliance with proper slope ratios
• Excavate basements
• Backfill using various techniques
• Load trucks
• Stockpiles materials
• Cut and fill materials
• Follow shutdown procedures
• Load Excavator on transport vehicle

Through classroom instruction and on site training, this program provides trainees with knowledge of the excavator operator’s job, the equipment, and safety concerns and responsibilities in addition to building operational skills. Trainees are expected to successfully complete a knowledge-based assessment and to demonstrate an established standard of performance for each operational skill, which includes conducting site and cab inspections, operating the boom, moving the stick in and out, loading and unloading the bucket, cleaning out sumps and ponds, unloading railcars, demonstrating pile management and trimming and discharging cargo.
The theory portion, successful completion of a practical component is necessary. The practical exercise consists of maneuvering an excavator through a predetermined obstacle course while performing several functions. Course will cover all aspects of the equipment such as:
• Overview of the excavator
• Historical Background
• Major Components
• Basic Specifications
• Principles of Operation
• Operating Capacities and Stability
• Instrumentation
• Warning Lights
• Operating Station
• Operating Controls
• General Operating Procedures
• Pre-operations Checklist
• Pre-start Walk-Around
• Mounting and Dismounting
• Seatbelts
• Start-up & Shut-down Procedure
• Re-fuelling
• Working with an Excavator
• Drive Control Levers
• Minimizing Equipment Wear
• General Excavator Maintenance Procedures
• Identified from Excavator Operator's Manual
• Excavator Safety
• Excavator Specific Safe Operating Measures
• Re-Fuelling Safely
• Emergency Procedures
